Michael
Simmons
A local journo for 18-plus years, Michael (or Simmo as he’s known to many) says the best part of his job is ‘the relationships you build’.
A regular at Nino’s Victor Harbor, he’s always up for a coffee or beer and a chat when he’s covering local news and events. He says learning about local volunteers and realising they’re the bedrock of the community is a highlight of his work.
‘It’s a constant education being a journalist in a local community.
‘There are so many selfless individuals and they’re the heroes. They’re the people I look at and respect.’
Simmo’s goal is to make the Fleurieu Sun a ‘gutsy paper with substance’.
‘To be part of the foundation team of something that’s going to offer the community news and sport that involves everyone on the Fleurieu Peninsula and watching that grow is pretty special.
‘I’m really proud to be a part of it. I’ve always valued my role as a journalist to be the voice of the community.’
